Installation Tips

1 Allow the engine to cool completely before starting work. The radiator fan can activate automatically even with the ignition off on these platforms — disconnect the negative battery terminal before touching the fan assembly.
2 Remove the front bumper cover or grille panel for easier access on most Golf/Jetta applications. On Passat B6/B7 the upper engine cover and top radiator bracket must be removed. Refer to the relevant workshop manual for your model.
3 Disconnect the main wiring connector from the fan control module before unbolting the shroud. The connector is typically a 4+2 pin plug located on the side of the FCM housing. Press the locking tab and pull straight out — do not twist.
4 Unbolt the fan shroud from the radiator bracket — typically 3–4 x T25 Torx or 10 mm bolts. Lift the assembly straight up and out of the lower locating clips. Take care not to damage the radiator fins during removal.
5 Fit the new assembly in reverse order. Seat the lower locating clips first before tightening the upper bolts. Torque shroud bolts to 8–10 Nm. Reconnect the wiring connector until it clicks.
6 Reconnect the battery and verify operation with a VCDS scan or OBD-II reader. Clear any stored fault codes. Run the engine at idle and turn on A/C — the fan should activate within 30–60 seconds at variable speed, not full blast.
7 No coding or adaptation required after replacement on standard petrol and diesel variants. On some DSG/automatic transmission variants, check for 09 — Electrics module in VCDS after replacement to confirm no new faults.
