CABO DO FREIO DE MÃO
The Parking Brake Cable Assembly (Mercedes-Benz OEM A9064206885) is the rear handbrake cable for the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter W906 and the co-developed VW Crafter (2E/2F platform). The cable is a multi-strand steel wire rope within a protective outer conduit that mechanically transmits pulling force from the handbrake lever to the parking brake mechanism integrated into each rear disc brake caliper. The Sprinter W906 uses rear disc brakes with a cable-operated mechanical parking mechanism in the caliper body — when the handbrake is applied, the cable engages a lever arm on the rear caliper that forces the brake pads against the disc independently of the hydraulic brake circuit.
The W906 Sprinter uses a three-segment mechanical parking brake: a primary (front) cable from the lever to an underbody equaliser bracket, and two identical rear secondary cables running from the equaliser to each rear caliper. A9064206885 is one of these rear cables — both sides are the same part number. The W906 is primarily deployed as a commercial working vehicle subject to demanding conditions: heavy payloads, loading dock use, and extended operation in cold-climate or salted-road environments. These accelerate corrosion of the inner wire strands within the outer conduit. Failure occurs either as progressive strand breakage reducing pull force below the required holding threshold, or as conduit seizure preventing the cable from returning to slack after the handbrake is released — causing continuous rear brake drag.

HS 7312.10 covers stranded steel wire ropes and cables. Both rear positions on the W906 use A9064206885 — order two units per vehicle for a complete rear cable set replacement.
A9064206885 is the rear parking brake cable for the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter W906 (2006 onward, RWD variants) and the VW Crafter 2E/2F (2006–2016). The cable is symmetric — the same part covers both LH and RH rear positions.

Difficulty: Moderate. The cable routing is longer than on passenger cars due to the commercial wheelbase. On high-mileage fleet Sprinters, underbody brackets and clips are frequently corroded and require penetrating oil and extended soak time. Estimated time: 60–120 minutes per side. The vehicle must be unloaded and raised on a suitable heavy-duty lift or ramp.
-
1Release the handbrake and slacken the cable adjuster completely. The W906 Sprinter adjuster is located at the equaliser bracket under the floor. Loosen the adjuster nut fully to provide maximum cable slack before disconnecting any end fitting.
-
2Raise the unloaded Sprinter on a heavy-duty lift or ramp. Apply penetrating oil to all underbody conduit brackets, retaining clips, and the caliper-end cable connection. Allow 15–20 minutes to soak. Photograph the complete cable routing path and all conduit clip positions before touching anything — the routing on the W906 passes through multiple underbody brackets along the rear axle and subframe, and incorrect re-routing causes kinking or exhaust contact.
-
3Disconnect the cable at the rear caliper first. The nipple engages the lever arm slot on the caliper parking brake mechanism. Depress the lever against its spring to release the nipple, then withdraw the conduit end from its bracket. With the cable disconnected, test the caliper lever for free movement and spring return before proceeding.
-
4Release all conduit retaining clips and brackets along the underbody from the caliper back toward the equaliser. On corroded W906 underbodies, use a flat trim tool and penetrating oil to release each bracket without damaging the mounting ears.
-
5Disconnect from the equaliser and route the new A9064206885 cable. Follow your reference photographs exactly for the routing path and secure all conduit clips in their original positions. Connect the caliper-end nipple into the lever slot. Adjust at the equaliser nut until the rear wheels lock firmly with 3–5 clicks of handbrake lever travel and both rear wheels rotate freely with the handbrake released.
-
6Apply and release the handbrake 5–10 times to seat the cable in its conduit. Re-check and fine-adjust the lever click count. Lower the Sprinter and perform a gradient hold test with a representative payload to confirm the parking brake holds the vehicle securely before returning it to commercial service.
| Part | Reference | Reason for Combined Replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Second Rear Cable (opposite side) | A9064206885 (same PN — LH = RH) | Both rear cables on the W906 Sprinter accumulate identical corrosion exposure over the same service life. Fleet vehicles operating in salt-road conditions degrade both cables uniformly. If one cable has failed, the other is at the same end-of-life stage. Replacing both during one lift visit is standard fleet maintenance practice — it eliminates a repeat lift and minimises commercial vehicle downtime. The symmetric cable design means both sides use the same part number, simplifying stocking. |
| Rear Brake Pads | MB OEM rear pads — W906 Sprinter, confirm by axle load rating | A seized parking cable that has held one or both rear brake pads against the disc will have caused accelerated and uneven pad wear on the affected side. Inspect pad thickness and surface condition on both sides when the cables are removed. Any pads below minimum thickness or showing uneven wear should be replaced simultaneously to restore correct braking geometry and prevent rapid wear of the new pads on a scored disc surface. |
| Rear Brake Discs | MB OEM rear discs — W906 Sprinter, confirm by axle load rating | Sustained overheating from a seized cable causes scoring and heat-checking of the rear disc rotor surface. On a commercial Sprinter under heavy payload, heat damage to discs is more severe than on a passenger car. Discs showing circumferential scoring, blue heat discolouration, or grooves from pad debris should be replaced alongside the cable to ensure the new brake pads bed in on a clean surface and achieve their full service life. |
