TOWING HOOK
The Towing Hook / Recovery Eye (Ford OEM 2096182, alternate designation BK31-19B537-AE) is the factory front recovery hook for the Ford Transit MK4 (V363) van and Transit Custom. It is a screw-in steel hook stored in the vehicle and threaded into a dedicated boss behind a removable cover in the front bumper when the vehicle requires recovery or emergency towing. This is a consumable safety item that must be carried in the vehicle at all times under European road regulations applicable to vehicles fitted with a screw-in recovery point.
The recovery hook is stored in the vehicle — typically in the load compartment, glove box, or tool kit bag — and is only deployed when the Transit needs to be recovered or towed by another vehicle. A corresponding bump-out cover in the front bumper fascia is removed by pressing or prising it out, revealing the threaded boss. The hook is then screwed in fully and a recovery strap or tow rope is attached to it. After use, the hook is removed and the bumper cover is refitted.
This hook is designed for emergency recovery use only — pulling a stuck vehicle out of soft ground, mud, or a ditch — and for short-distance flat-towing where the vehicle is being moved by a tow truck using a rope or strap attached to the front. It is not designed for sustained towing with a trailer from the front recovery point. The van must be carried in neutral with no engine braking on the driven axle when being towed by this hook. Available wholesale from ok.parts, $6.57 USD, MOQ 1 pc, lead time 20–55 days.
Before attaching a recovery strap or tow rope to the hook, confirm all of the following: the hook is fully threaded into the front bumper boss with no rotation possible by hand; the hook loop shows no cracks, gouges, or deformation; the bumper area around the hook boss is not cracked or broken (a cracked bumper boss will not retain the hook under load); the recovery strap or rope is rated for the gross vehicle weight of the Transit (up to 3,500 kg GVW depending on variant); and the recovery angle is within 30 degrees of the vehicle’s longitudinal centreline.

HS code 8716.90 covers parts and accessories of trailers and semi-trailers — the standard classification for towing and recovery hooks designed for vehicle fitment. Some jurisdictions may classify towing hooks under 7326.90 (other articles of iron or steel) — verify with your customs broker. EAEU TN VED 8716 90 910 0 applies to the Eurasian Economic Union territory. Steel towing hooks are non-hazardous for all standard shipping modes.

• Fitment is for the Ford Transit MK4 (V363) and Transit Custom (V362) front recovery hook boss only. Earlier Transit generations (MK6, MK7, V184/V347) use different towing hook designs and part numbers. Verify the production year and confirm the bumper has a corresponding access cover for the towing hook before ordering. The Transit Tourneo and Transit Connect are different platforms with different recovery hook part numbers.
The towing hook is a field-deployable item installed by the driver during a breakdown or recovery situation, not in a workshop. The procedure is straightforward but must be followed correctly — particularly the left-hand thread direction — to ensure safe engagement before attaching a recovery strap.
-
1Locate the towing hook storage location in the vehicle. In most Ford Transit MK4 configurations the hook is stored in the driver’s door pocket, load compartment tool tray, or a pouch behind the driver’s seat. If it is not present in any of these locations, it has been lost and must be replaced (order 2096182) before the vehicle can be safely recovered.
-
2Locate the towing hook access cover on the front bumper. On the Ford Transit MK4, the front recovery hook cover is a small rectangular or triangular bump-out panel on the lower front bumper, typically on the driver’s side. Insert a flat tool (screwdriver blade or coin) into the slot at the edge of the cover and prise it carefully outward. The cover is retained by plastic clips and can be refitted after use. Do not crack the bumper when removing the cover — use gentle progressive pressure.
-
3Inspect the threaded boss behind the cover. Confirm the boss (the metal insert in the bumper structure) is clean and undamaged. If the boss threads are visibly damaged or the boss is cracked, the hook cannot be safely used — vehicle recovery must be carried out by a breakdown specialist using lifting equipment.
-
4Thread the 2096182 hook into the boss counter-clockwise (left-hand thread). Begin threading by hand, rotating the hook body counter-clockwise (when viewed from the front of the van). The hook should engage smoothly from the first turn. If resistance is felt before the hook has moved more than half a turn, the hook is cross-threaded — stop immediately, back out, realign, and retry. Never force the hook if it does not engage smoothly. Continue turning counter-clockwise until the hook is fully tight and cannot be rotated further by hand.
-
5Orient the hook loop to receive the recovery strap. Once fully tightened, the hook loop should be accessible for the strap attachment. Attach the recovery strap or tow rope through the hook loop — not around the bumper or any other body component. Ensure the strap is rated for at least the Transit’s gross vehicle weight (up to 3,500 kg GVW for heavy Transit variants).
-
6During recovery, keep all persons clear of the strap and hook. Recovery straps under tension store significant energy if they or the hook fail. Stand clear of the strap line during the recovery pull. Signal the recovery vehicle driver to proceed slowly and without sudden jerking loads.
-
7After recovery, remove the hook by turning clockwise (left-hand thread removal direction) and refit the bumper cover. Inspect the hook body and loop for deformation before storing. If any deformation is visible, replace the hook (2096182) before returning the vehicle to service. Refit the bumper cover by pressing it back into its clips until it snaps flush.
| Part | Ford Reference | Reason for Combined Order |
|---|---|---|
| Front Bumper Towing Hook Cover / Cap | Verify by year and bumper variant — transit-specific | The plastic cover over the front towing hook boss is frequently lost or broken during recovery events — particularly if it has been forcibly removed rather than carefully prised out. Without the cover, the threaded boss is exposed to road debris, water, and corrosion, which can damage the threads and prevent the hook from being installed in an emergency. When replacing a lost or damaged 2096182 hook, inspect the bumper cover and order a replacement if it is cracked or missing. |
| Recovery Strap (rated for vehicle GVW) | Accessory — not a Ford OEM part number | The towing hook is only usable if a suitable recovery strap or tow rope is also carried in the vehicle. Fleet operators replacing missing hooks should simultaneously equip the vehicle with a rated recovery strap. For Ford Transit variants up to 3,500 kg GVW, a 4-tonne or higher-rated recovery strap is appropriate. Kinetic (elastic) recovery ropes should not be used with screw-in hook bosses — use static tow ropes or flat webbing straps to prevent shock loading. |
| Rear Towing Hook / Recovery Eye | Ford-specific rear hook PN — verify by Transit body variant | Fleet operators restocking recovery equipment for Transit vans should order both front and rear recovery hooks simultaneously. A vehicle that carries one hook but not the other is only half-equipped for breakdown scenarios — if the front recovery boss is inaccessible (e.g. front-end damage), the rear hook is the only option. Confirm the rear hook part number for the specific Transit body configuration before ordering. |
