MOQ, Samples and the First Order: Starting with an Auto Parts Supplier
Stated minimum order quantities for auto parts are often lower than first-time importers expect: in a snapshot of more than 11,000 live offers on ok.parts in October 2026, 58% stated an MOQ of 1 piece, a quarter asked for 30 pieces or more and one in ten for 100 or more. The catch: an MOQ of 1 is usually a single-piece or sample quote, the low unit price starts at the batch quantity, and factory offers state a median production time of about 38 days.
This guide covers the minimums, samples and a first trial order sized so that a mistake costs little. The wider process is in How to Import Auto Parts from China: The Process Step by Step.

1. What MOQ Means in the Parts Trade
MOQ (minimum order quantity) is the smallest quantity a supplier will accept. In auto parts three different minimums can apply to the same order.
| Kind of minimum | How it is stated | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Per part number | Pieces of one number | One production batch of that number |
| Per order | A minimum invoice value or shipment size | The fixed work of an export order: packing, documents, inland freight |
| Per packaging design | A print run per box size and artwork | The print shop, not the parts factory (see private-label minimums) |
The per-number minimum matters most, because a parts range is a long list of numbers that each sell slowly. Left and right, front and rear, every engine variant: each is a separate number and a separate batch.
Why factories set a minimum
- Batch size and tooling. Changing a mold, a forging die or a machining fixture stops the line, and the setup costs the same for 20 pieces as for 2,000.
- Material lots. Rubber compound is mixed by the batch, castings are poured by the melt, plating is done by the bath load. Bought-in components - the bearing in a pulley, the connector on a sensor, the motor in a lock actuator - come from sub-suppliers with minimums of their own.
None of this applies to parts already on the shelf, so always ask whether a number is in stock.
2. What MOQs Actually Look Like: 11,000 Offers Counted
The figures come from a snapshot of ok.parts offers in October 2026: 11,428 live offers for 561 of the most-searched part numbers in eleven part groups, from suspension and brakes to sensors and locks. 88% of the offers came from factories and 10% from wholesale companies; 90% were from China and 10% from the United Arab Emirates. MOQ and lead time are what suppliers state in their offers, before any negotiation.
| Stated MOQ | All offers | Factory offers | Wholesale-company offers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 piece | 58% | 53% | 97% |
| 2-10 pieces | 6% | 6% | 0% |
| 11-50 pieces | 23% | 25% | 2% |
| 51-100 pieces | 8% | 9% | 0% |
| Over 100 pieces | 6% | 7% | 0% |
Shares are rounded. Across all offers the median stated MOQ is 1, the 75th percentile 30 and the 90th percentile 100.
Factories and wholesalers are different worlds. About four in ten factory offers ask for more than 10 pieces; wholesale companies, which sell from stock, almost never do.
MOQ rises with supplier rank. By supplier rank on ok.parts (A is the highest), the median stated MOQ is 20 pieces for ranks A and B, 10 for rank C and 1 for ranks D and E.
A stated MOQ of 1 is not a bulk price for one piece. It usually means the supplier will quote a single piece or a sample. Ask every supplier two questions: what is the price at 1, 20, 50 and 100 pieces, and is the part in stock or made to order.
Stated lead time follows the same split. Of the factory offers from China, 76% state 31-45 days; the median is about 38 days and the middle 80% fall between 30 and 52 days. That is production time; transit comes on top (see Shipping Auto Parts from China). Wholesale-company offers state 7 days or less in 97% of cases, with a median of 2 days.
3. How MOQ Differs by Part Type
Small molded parts cost little and come off the tool in large numbers, so factories tend to sell them by the hundred; cast and machined assemblies cost more and take more space, so stated minimums tend to be lower. In the visible offers for the example numbers in this article, none of the five brake caliper numbers shows a stated MOQ above 100, and four stop at 50; a stabilizer bar bushing goes up to 600 pieces and a drum-brake wheel cylinder to 500.
Count the money, not only the pieces. At the median offer price in the October 2026 snapshot (about USD 0.67), 600 pieces of bushing 4056A230 is roughly USD 400 of goods. Fifty pieces of rear caliper 5K0615423 at a median of about USD 17 is roughly USD 870. These medians mix stock and factory offers, so read them as orders of magnitude - but the "high" MOQ is the smaller commitment.
The table lists ten of these numbers with MOQ values stated in their offers ("include" marks a list that may be longer). The pattern is a tendency, not a rule: water pump 04E121600P is not a cheap part and still has offers at 300 and 500 pieces. Read the offer title before comparing: some numbers carry more than one item, such as a bushing under a link number.
| OEM number | Brand | Part | Offers | Median price | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4056A230 | Mitsubishi | Stabilizer bar bushing | 63 | $0.67 | MOQ 1, 100, 200, 600 |
| 1385739 | Ford | Wheel brake cylinder (drum brake) | 32 | $2.33 | MOQ 1, 50, 300, 500 |
| 7E0609701E | VW / Audi / Skoda / Seat | Parking brake cable | 36 | $1.79 | MOQ 1 or 50, nothing in between |
| 2183428 | Ford | Brake pad wear sensor | 57 | $0.75 | MOQ 1, 10, 50, 100 |
| 1778554 | DAF | Truck wheel speed sensor (ABS) | 59 | $2.99 | MOQs include 1, 5, 10, 20, 30, 50 |
| 1K0501529F | VW / Audi / Skoda / Seat | Rear suspension link (control arm) | 169 | $4.33 | MOQs include 1, 30, 50, 100, 250, 300; some offers are for the bushing only |
| 5K0615423 | VW / Audi / Skoda / Seat | Rear brake caliper | 53 | $17.32 | MOQ 1, 10, 20, 30, 50 |
| 1J0609617B | VW / Audi / Skoda / Seat | Brake drum | 68 | $9.24 | MOQ 1, 10, 50, 100 |

4. Getting Below the MOQ Honestly
A minimum moves when you remove the factory's cost, not when you promise a container next year. Four approaches work.
A trading company can also combine small quantities from several factories, for a margin (see Factory or Trading Company?).
UAE stock versus factory production in China
| China offers | UAE offers | |
|---|---|---|
| Stated MOQ of 1 | 53% of offers | 100% of offers |
| Median stated lead time | About 38 days | 2 days |
| Median offer price under the same number | Baseline | Median 8.8 times the China median |
The price row covers 279 numbers offered from both countries; for a quarter of them the gap is 14.9 times or more. It is not a like-for-like price difference. It mostly compares genuine-brand stock with unbranded factory parts: UAE offers are mostly ready stock, often under the vehicle maker's brand, while 87% of all offers in the snapshot are unbranded. Branded and unbranded offers differ by a similar factor: across 269 numbers offered both ways, offers under a vehicle maker's brand have a median price 11.4 times that of unbranded offers.
Stock buys speed and single pieces, which suits an urgent order or a slow-moving number. Factory production buys the low unit price in exchange for a batch and a stated production time that is most often 31-45 days. For other supply countries see Auto Parts Sourcing Beyond China.
5. Samples: What to Ask For and Who Pays
Order samples before any production order with a new supplier, even for a cheap part. Ask for:
- A part from current production, not a showroom piece, with the marking the factory normally applies.
- The complete kit. Many parts are sold with hardware: a control arm with its nut, a truck wheel speed sensor with its clamping bush and a sachet of grease.
- The packaging proposed for the order, including the label with the part number.
- Two or three pieces per number where the price allows: one to fit on a vehicle, one to measure or cut open, one to keep untouched as the reference.
- The specification sheet the factory works to, and any test report it offers.

Practice varies, but the usual pattern is: the buyer pays the freight; cheap small parts are often free; for anything of value factories usually charge, sometimes above the bulk price. Some credit the sample charge against the first order - ask, and agree it in writing in advance.
Samples travel by express courier, and couriers bill the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight (calculated from the box dimensions). A brake drum is charged for its weight and a valve cover for its volume, and either can cost more to ship than to buy. To cut the bill, have several factories send samples to one forwarder in China who combines them into one parcel.
A sample parcel is still an import: whether duty and tax are due depends on the destination country's rules, so ask the courier or your customs broker.
6. Why a Sample Does Not Prove Mass Production
A good sample proves that the supplier can obtain one good part, not that 500 pieces made six weeks later will match it.
A sample may be picked by hand from a good batch, or come from a different factory than the one that will fill the order. And what decides service life is invisible on a single piece: the rubber compound in a bushing, the plating on a caliper, the bearing in a pulley. Any of these can change between sample and batch when a factory is pressed on price.
The tool against this is the approved sample, often called the golden sample:
- Check the sample against the original part or on the vehicle: mounting points, thread, connector shape and keying, cable length.
- Approve it in writing and mark it with part number, date and signature. Keep one sealed piece; the factory keeps another.
- Refer to it in the purchase order, and list what must not change without your consent: material, bought-in components, marking, packaging.
- Have the finished batch compared against it before it ships.
Step 4 is a pre-shipment inspection; sampling plans, defect classes and inspection costs are in Auto Parts Quality Control in China - The Complete Inspection Guide.
7. Structuring the First Trial Order
The first order has one purpose: to find out, at a cost you can absorb, whether the supplier delivers what the sample promised. A rule of thumb:
- One supplier, one product family. When something goes wrong you need to know whose process failed.
- Ten to twenty part numbers that you already sell. You can judge the new parts against a known sales and returns record.
- The factory's minimum per number, or slightly above. At the 75th-percentile MOQ of 30 pieces from the snapshot, fifteen numbers come to 450 pieces - for most parts cartons or a pallet or two, not a container.
- Neutral packaging. It keeps the order free of print minimums and the goods sellable through any channel.
What to inspect
A mixed-SKU parts order fails in predictable ways. Check before the balance is paid:
- quantity per number, and labels on cartons and boxes that match the part inside;
- left and right parts in equal numbers where they sell in pairs;
- hardware and small parts present in every box;
- dimensions and marking against the approved sample;
- a function test for electrical parts such as sensors and lock actuators;
- rust protection and inner packing for drums, calipers and other bare metal parts.
A common structure is a deposit with the order and the balance after inspection, before shipment (see How to Pay a Chinese Auto Parts Supplier); who arranges freight depends on the delivery term (see Incoterms for Auto Parts Importers).
How to scale
Sell the trial stock and record returns by part number. Then reorder what sold, widen the range within the same product family and ask for price breaks at the next quantity step. Move to your own packaging once your volume per box size clears the print minimum.
8. Private-Label Minimums: Boxes, Labels and Marking
Once your brand goes on the product, a second set of minimums applies.
| Branding level | What sets the minimum | Effect on MOQ |
|---|---|---|
| Sticker label on a neutral box | Label printing, where short runs are routine | Small |
| Printed box | The print run per box size and artwork | Often the largest minimum in the order |
| Marking on the part | Laser marking is applied piece by piece; a logo in the mold means changing the tool | Small for laser marking, larger for a logo in the tool |
To keep box minimums manageable, print by box size, not by part number. A few printed box sizes, each completed with a variable label carrying the part number and barcode, serve a whole range.
Two warnings. Check that you hold the trademark in the countries where you sell before you print anything. And never ask a factory to put a vehicle maker's logo or another company's brand on the goods: that is counterfeiting (see Counterfeit Auto Parts: How to Spot Fakes Before You Pay).
Costs and timelines for a branded range are in Private Label Auto Parts Manufacturer in China. That guide puts a typical private-label MOQ at 500-2,000 pieces per SKU for simple components and 200-500 for complex parts - well above the stated MOQs quoted here, which describe mostly neutral-packed parts.
9. Where ok.parts Fits and Where It Does Not
On ok.parts a buyer searches by OEM number and sees the offers for that number side by side: price, stated MOQ, lead time, supplier country and supplier rank. That shows the stated minimum for a number, and whether a stock offer exists, before you write to anyone. Supplier contacts are opened per supplier, and you can also post a buying request with your quantities.
The limits: there is no browsable list of products, so you need the part number first (How to Find and Read an OEM Part Number). MOQ and lead time on an offer are what the supplier states, not the result of a test order. Price at your quantity, samples, inspection and payment terms are agreed between you and the supplier. And the statistics here describe 561 much-searched numbers on one day in October 2026; slow-moving numbers can look different.

10. Frequently Asked Questions
What is a typical MOQ for auto parts from China?
In a snapshot of ok.parts offers in October 2026, 53% of factory offers stated an MOQ of 1, 25% stated 11-50 pieces and 7% more than 100. In the examples in this article, cheap molded parts show the highest piece minimums.
Can I order below the supplier's MOQ?
Often, yes. Ask for numbers the factory has in stock in neutral packaging, combine several numbers from one product family, or offer a higher unit price that covers the setup. For single pieces, use a stock wholesaler.
Does an MOQ of 1 mean I can buy one piece at the wholesale price?
Usually not. It means the supplier will quote a single piece or a sample; the low unit price normally starts at a batch quantity.
Who pays for samples and sample shipping?
The buyer normally pays the courier freight. Cheap small parts are often free; for parts of value factories usually charge, and some credit the charge against the first order if that is agreed in advance.
How can I make sure mass production matches the sample?
Approve one sample in writing, mark and seal it, and refer to it in the purchase order. Then have the finished batch inspected against that approved sample before you pay the balance.
How many part numbers should I put in a first order?
A workable rule of thumb is ten to twenty numbers you already sell, from one product family and one supplier. Order at or slightly above the minimum per number.
