Auto Parts Sourcing Beyond China: Turkey, India, Thailand and the UAE Compared

The short answer: no single location replaces China across the whole parts range, but each alternative does one thing well - Turkey builds parts for European-brand vehicles, India makes forged, cast, machined and rubber parts plus two-wheeler and commercial-vehicle parts, Thailand supplies Japanese-brand cars and pickups, and the UAE holds ready stock rather than factories. A second source is therefore chosen per product group and per part number, not per location.

This guide profiles each sourcing location, compares them in one table, and gives numbers where we have them: a snapshot of ok.parts offers in October 2026, in which the same part numbers are offered by factories in China and from stock in the UAE. The other profiles rest on how the trade works and on what industry bodies publish, not on our own offer data.

1. Why importers add a second source

Few importers leave China. Most add a second source next to it, for one of four reasons.

  • Duty by origin. Import duty can differ with the origin of the goods, so the same part may be charged differently when it is made somewhere else. Check the tariff of your own market for your HS code and origin - see Importing Auto Parts into the USA and Importing Auto Parts into the EU.
  • Lead time. A factory order is production time plus sea freight. In our October 2026 snapshot the median production time stated in Chinese factory offers is about 38 days.
  • Concentration risk. One factory, one port and one shipping lane is a single point of failure: a holiday shutdown or a mold repair stops supply.
  • Genuine-brand stock. Factories sell their own or unbranded product. Parts in the vehicle maker's box (terms explained in OEM vs OES vs aftermarket) come from distributors and stock wholesalers in trading hubs.

2. Duty follows origin, not the port of loading

As a general principle, customs duty is assessed on the origin of the goods - broadly, where they were made or last substantially transformed - not on where the seller sits or where the container was loaded. A part made in China and bought from a stock wholesaler in Dubai keeps its Chinese origin at your customs office.

The rule works in your favor only when the goods really are made elsewhere. A lower duty under a trade agreement needs a valid proof of preferential origin from the exporter; repacking or relabeling does not change origin. The detailed rules differ by market.

This article is general information, not legal, tax or customs advice. Classification, origin and the duty actually payable on your goods are confirmed by a licensed customs broker or the customs authority of the importing market.

3. Turkey: parts for European-brand vehicles

Turkey's parts industry is built around the vehicle plants located there. The members of OSD, the Turkish vehicle manufacturers' association, include Ford Otosan, Tofas (Fiat models), Oyak Renault, Toyota, Hyundai Assan, Mercedes-Benz Turk and MAN, plus bus, truck and tractor builders. According to TAYSAD, the Turkish automotive suppliers' association, 81% of its members operate in the Marmara region (Bursa, Kocaeli, Istanbul) and 10% in the Aegean region.

What it is good for:

  • Parts for European-brand cars and light vans: suspension, steering and rubber-to-metal parts, brake components, filters, radiators, lamps and body parts.
  • Truck, trailer and bus parts for European makes, a field in which Turkey has its own aftermarket brands.
  • Short transit to Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, which suits smaller, more frequent orders.

The customs union with the EU. As of October 2026 the European Commission's Access2Markets portal states that the EU-Turkey customs union covers industrial products, which includes auto parts, and processed agricultural products, with zero customs duties and zero quotas for the goods covered. Goods wholly produced in the customs union, or put into free circulation in it after import, move between Turkey and the EU when accompanied by an A.TR movement certificate. The A.TR is proof of customs status, not proof that the part was made in Turkey; if you need Turkish origin, ask for separate origin evidence. The EU paperwork is covered in Importing Auto Parts into the EU.

4. India: forgings, castings, machined and rubber parts

India's strength is metal: forged and cast parts, machining and the assemblies built from them - crankshafts, connecting rods, gears and shafts, axle and steering components, brake drums and discs - together with rubber parts such as hoses, mounts and seals. The national body is ACMA, the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India.

What sets India apart:

  • Two- and three-wheeler parts. India builds and exports motorcycles, scooters and three-wheelers in very large volumes, so parts for Indian-brand bikes and three-wheelers are sourced there.
  • Commercial-vehicle and tractor parts. Parts for Indian-built trucks, buses, pickups and tractors are a home product, not a copy.
  • Process suppliers. Many firms sell a process (forging, casting, machining to drawing) rather than a ready range by OEM number, with MOQ set by the production batch. That suits a buyer with drawings and steady volume better than one with a long mixed list of numbers.

5. Thailand: Japanese-brand vehicles and pickup parts

Thailand is a major production base of the Japanese vehicle makers in Southeast Asia. They have assembled there since the 1960s, and Toyota, Isuzu, Honda and Mitsubishi are among those building there today. One-ton pickups are a signature product: the Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max, Mitsubishi Triton (L200) and Ford Ranger are all built in Thailand.

What it is good for:

  • Parts for Japanese-brand cars and, above all, pickups and pickup-based SUVs: suspension, steering, brake, engine, cooling and body parts.
  • OE-supplier grade: many parts factories are subsidiaries or joint ventures of Japanese parts makers that supply the assembly plants.
  • Rubber parts, backed by a large natural-rubber industry.
  • Genuine parts for Thai-built models, traded by exporters alongside local aftermarket brands.

6. The UAE: ready stock in Dubai and Sharjah, not factories

The UAE is a trading and re-export hub, not a manufacturing base for auto parts. Wholesalers in Dubai and Sharjah import from Japan, South Korea, Europe, Thailand, China and elsewhere, hold the goods in stock and sell to buyers from the Gulf, Africa, Central Asia and beyond.

What you buy is availability. Parts are on the shelf, and a buyer can consolidate genuine parts in the vehicle maker's box, OE-supplier brands and aftermarket brands in one shipment. In our October 2026 snapshot every UAE offer states an MOQ of one piece and the median stated lead time is 2 days.

You pay for it: a stockist has already paid freight, storage and financing, and much of the stock is genuine-brand product (see the data section). Because genuine parts are the attraction, authenticity is the main risk - check boxes, labels and markings as described in Counterfeit Auto Parts: How to Spot Fakes.

The trade meets at Automechanika Dubai; according to the organizer, the next edition is scheduled for 10-12 November 2026 at the Dubai Exhibition Centre.

7. Taiwan, South Korea and European wholesalers

Taiwan. Taiwan-based manufacturers are known for aftermarket collision parts: head and tail lamps, mirrors, bumpers, grilles, sheet-metal panels, radiators and condensers. A buyer serving the North American repair market can ask whether a part is certified by CAPA, the Certified Automotive Parts Association - by its own description an independent, non-profit certification organization for automotive crash parts, founded in 1987. Collision parts are bulky, so orders are planned by container.

South Korea. The home source for Hyundai and Kia parts. Hyundai Mobis supplies the genuine after-sales parts for both makes, and Korean exporters trade those alongside the brands of suppliers that deliver to the assembly lines (the OE-supplier or OES tier).

European wholesalers. Distributors in the EU hold stock of genuine and OE-supplier brand parts for European vehicles. The model is the same as in Dubai: one piece, shipped quickly, at a branded price.

8. Sourcing locations compared

Price level is relative to Chinese factory offers for a comparable part. The cells are qualitative descriptions of common trade practice, not measured data - except the UAE row, which reflects what suppliers state in our offer snapshot.

9. UAE versus China in numbers: ok.parts offers, October 2026

This is first-hand data: a sample of about 11,400 live offers for 561 part numbers on ok.parts, taken on 7 October 2026. Of those offers, 90% come from suppliers in China and 10% from the UAE; 88% are from factories and 10% from wholesale companies. MOQ and lead time are the values suppliers state in their offers.

Median stated lead timeAbout 38 days (factory production; 30 to 52 days for the middle 80%)2 days (stock)
Median price for the same numberBase8.8 times the China median - not like for like

The price line needs explaining. For the 279 numbers offered from both locations, the median UAE price is a median 8.8 times the median China price; for a quarter of them the gap is 14.9 times or more. That is not a premium for the same product: the multiple mostly compares genuine-brand ready stock in the UAE with unbranded factory offers in China: 87% of all offers in the snapshot are unbranded, and where one number is offered both under a vehicle-maker brand and unbranded (269 numbers), the branded median is a median 11.4 times the unbranded one. A stated MOQ of 1 means a supplier will quote a single piece or sample, not that single pieces ship at the bulk price.

The examples include numbers with suppliers in both locations and in one. Notes list supplier locations and brands separately; they do not say which location carries which brand.

10. How to run two sources for one part number

Two sources for one number only work if both deliver the same part. In auto parts that is not automatic: under one number you will find different materials and rubber compounds, sometimes a bushing listed under the number of the complete arm.

  1. Use the OEM number as the common key. Clean it (no spaces, dashes or dots), add superseded numbers, and send the identical list to both suppliers. See How to Find and Read an OEM Part Number.
  2. Ask both for the same facts. Brand on the part and on the box, origin marking, weight, material, photos of the actual item.
  3. Compare samples side by side. Check one sample from each source against a genuine reference part: dimensions, weight, connector and thread, rubber hardness, markings. See MOQ, Samples and the First Order and the quality control guide.
  4. Compare landed cost, not unit price. Same Incoterm, same currency, freight, duty by origin.
  5. Keep the sources apart in stock. Give each its own internal code or batch label, so a warranty return can be traced.

How the order is split depends on what the second source is for:

Factory plus stock wholesaler
Order fast-moving numbers from the factory in volume and plan for its production lead time. Use the stockist for urgent top-ups, slow movers and single pieces.
Most common
Two factories, two locations
Split one product group between a factory in China and one in Turkey, India or Thailand. Each must pass the same sample check.
Risk cover
Genuine plus aftermarket
Sell two tiers under one number: genuine brand from a stockist, unbranded or private label from a factory, labeled as different products.
Two price tiers

Where ok.parts fits and where it does not

On ok.parts a buyer searches by OEM number and compares offers from factories and wholesalers side by side, with price, MOQ, lead time, supplier country and rank on the offer page; contacts are opened per supplier. For the China-plus-UAE combination that comparison exists for the numbers offered from both. For Turkey, India, Thailand, Taiwan or South Korea it does not: the offers in our October 2026 snapshot come from China and the UAE, so for those locations use industry association directories and trade shows, or post a buying request stating the origin you need.

For the Chinese side of a two-source setup, see Where Auto Parts Are Made in China.

11. Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good alternative to China for OEM-quality auto parts?

It depends on the vehicle. For European makes look at Turkey, for Japanese-brand cars and pickups at Thailand, for Hyundai and Kia at South Korea, and for forged, cast and machined parts at India. Genuine parts from stock come from the UAE and European wholesalers.

Is it cheaper to buy auto parts from India or Turkey than from China?

Usually not on unit price, although it varies by part, so get quotes for your own numbers. Any saving tends to come from duty by origin, shorter transit or smaller orders; compare landed cost for your own market.

Does buying Chinese-made parts from Dubai stock change the import duty?

As a rule, no. Duty is assessed on the origin of the goods, not on the seller's location or the port of loading, so a part made in China and bought from UAE stock keeps its Chinese origin. Confirm the details with your customs broker.

Does the EU-Turkey customs union mean there is no duty on auto parts from Turkey?

As of October 2026 the European Commission's Access2Markets portal states zero customs duties and zero quotas for goods covered by the customs union, which covers industrial products such as auto parts, when they move with an A.TR movement certificate. The A.TR proves customs status, not Turkish origin. VAT and the product rules of the destination market still apply.

Where can I buy genuine Toyota, Nissan or Hyundai parts in bulk?

From stock wholesalers and distributors rather than parts factories: the UAE for a mix of Japanese and Korean genuine parts, Thailand for Thai-built models, South Korea for Hyundai and Kia. Check authenticity before paying.

Does ok.parts list suppliers from Turkey, India or Thailand?

The offers in the October 2026 snapshot used for this guide come from suppliers in China and the UAE. For other origins, post a buying request with your part numbers and the origin you need.
