Alibaba, 1688, Factory Direct or Sourcing Agent: Where to Buy Auto Parts

There is no single best place to buy wholesale auto parts. The right channel depends on three things: whether you buy by part number, how many pieces per number you need, and how much of the supplier checking you can do yourself. A buyer who needs 500 pieces of one control arm goes to a factory; a buyer who needs 300 numbers at five pieces each goes to a stock wholesaler or an agent. Many importers combine two or three.

This guide compares six channels: Alibaba.com, 1688.com, factory direct, trading companies and sourcing agents, stock wholesalers in re-export hubs such as Dubai, and marketplaces searched by OEM number such as ok.parts. Its figures come from a snapshot of ok.parts offers in October 2026 (about 11,400 offers for 561 part numbers in eleven part groups).

1. Three Kinds of Seller Behind Every Channel

Every channel leads to one of three types of company. Minimum order quantity (MOQ), lead time and price follow from what the seller is, not from where it advertises.

Factory
Makes the part, usually unbranded, and produces to order: 76% of factory offers in the snapshot state a lead time of 31-45 days.
Lowest price, MOQ, waiting time
Trading company or agent
Buys from several factories, consolidates and handles export paperwork, for a margin or a fee.
Mixed orders, one contact
Stock wholesaler
Holds goods on the shelf, often under the vehicle maker's brand. In the snapshot 97% of wholesaler offers state up to 7 days and an MOQ of 1.
Fast, small lots, higher price

In the snapshot, 88% of offers came from factories and 10% from wholesale companies; 90% were located in China and 10% in the United Arab Emirates. Factory or Trading Company? explains how to tell the two apart.

This article is general information, not legal, tax or customs advice. The programs and terms of the companies named here change: read their own pages before relying on them, and have a licensed customs broker confirm duties for your goods.

2. Why Auto Parts Are Bought by Number, Not by Keyword

A phone case can be found by describing it. A control arm cannot: many look alike in a thumbnail and differ by a few millimeters or by the side of the car. What identifies an auto part is its OEM number (the vehicle maker's part number). Where listings are free text and search is by keyword, a parts buyer meets three difficulties:

  • One part, many names. Offer titles for the Toyota number 4631033010 in the snapshot include "EPB actuator", "servomotor" and "rear brake caliper". A search by words has to guess each one.
  • One number, several spellings. The same number can be typed with a hyphen, with a space or with neither - say 54610-2B000, 54610 2B000 or 546102B000 (an illustration of formats, not a quote from listings), and a search for one spelling can miss the others.
  • Fitment is the seller's statement. A line such as "fits 2008-2016" in a title (an invented example) cannot be checked on the page, and a wrong variant of a sensor or door lock is unsellable.

Quotes are comparable only when they are for the same part. Searching by OEM number solves most of this - not all, as the figures below show. To identify the number first, see How to Find and Read an OEM Part Number.

3. The Six Channels Compared

Price level is relative: it reflects who the sellers are, not any single offer.

4. Alibaba.com: the International B2B Marketplace

Alibaba Group describes Alibaba.com as its first business, launched in 1999, and as a platform for global business-to-business e-commerce (group website, October 2026). Manufacturers and trading companies publish listings; buyers search by keyword and category, message sellers or post a request for quotation. Three things matter to a parts buyer:

  • Supplier labels. According to Alibaba.com's seller pages (October 2026), "Gold Supplier" is a paid membership and "Verified Supplier" a membership tier that includes on-site verification by a third-party inspection company. Both describe the supplier; neither is a fitment check of an individual part.
  • Trade Assurance. Alibaba.com's order protection program. According to its own page (October 2026), it covers orders agreed with a supplier and paid through Alibaba.com: the buyer can claim a refund if the order is not shipped, goes missing or arrives with defects or incorrect items, and the platform mediates. Conditions, limits and deadlines are in the program terms: read them before paying.
  • Keyword search. Whether an OEM number finds a part depends on how the seller wrote that number in the listing.

Keyword search suits goods that are described rather than numbered: accessories, tools, universal items, custom products. For numbered parts, buyers commonly find makers of a product group there, send a list of numbers and compare the quotes.

5. 1688.com: the Domestic Wholesale Site

1688.com belongs to the same group, which describes it as an integrated domestic wholesale marketplace in China, founded in 1999 (group website, October 2026). The word that matters is "domestic": the site is in Chinese, prices are in RMB, and it is built around payment and delivery inside China.

Listed prices are domestic wholesale prices: export packing, export clearance and international freight are not included, and a seller may have no export staff. Search is by Chinese keywords.

Buyers outside China therefore commonly use 1688 through a purchasing agent in China who places the orders, pays in RMB, receives and checks the parcels and exports one consolidated shipment. Add the agent's fee and domestic delivery to the listed price before comparing it with an export quote. What the site offers buyers abroad directly changes over time; check the site itself.

The channel suits buyers with a trusted agent or their own staff in China. Verification falls on that agent, which matters most for safety parts.

6. Buying Direct from the Factory

Going direct removes the intermediary's margin and means accepting the factory's terms. Factories are found at trade shows and in manufacturing clusters. Automechanika Shanghai 2026 runs from 2 to 5 December 2026 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai, and its organizer expects about 7,600 exhibitors (organizer's website, October 2026); see the buyer's guide to the show. In a cluster, makers of one product group sit close together: see Where Auto Parts Are Made in China.

Factory terms in the October 2026 snapshot:

  • MOQ. 53% of factory offers state an MOQ of 1, which usually means a sample or a quoted single piece, not the bulk price. A quarter state 11-50 pieces and 16% more than 50.
  • Lead time. Median about 38 days of production before shipping; the middle 80% of offers fall between 30 and 52 days.
  • Brand. 87% of all offers in the snapshot are unbranded or in neutral packaging.

Factory direct is the natural channel for private label and for buyers whose volume per number reaches the MOQ. It fits 200 numbers at ten pieces each poorly: no single factory makes them all, and each applies its minimum (see MOQ, Samples and the First Order).

7. Trading Companies and Sourcing Agents

A trading company buys from factories and resells in its own name: you sign with it, pay it and claim from it. A sourcing agent works on your behalf for a commission or fee and may let you contract with the factory directly. In practice the two overlap; what counts is who the seller is on the contract and the invoice. An intermediary adds:

  • Consolidation. Brake parts from one factory and sensors from another arrive in one shipment, with one set of documents.
  • Lower MOQ per number. A company that buys a product line regularly can split a factory's minimum across customers.
  • Local presence. Someone can compare the goods with the approved sample and buy from sellers without export staff.

The cost is the margin and less visibility: you may not know which factory made the part. Ask for the manufacturer's name on safety parts, agree in writing who pays for defective goods, and do not count an inspection by the seller as independent. See Auto Parts Quality Control in China.

8. Stock Wholesalers in Re-Export Hubs

Dubai and a few other trading cities hold large stocks of parts for re-export. The sellers are wholesalers, not manufacturers: they sell what is on the shelf, by the piece.

In the snapshot every UAE offer stated an MOQ of 1, and the median lead time was 2 days against about 38 for China. For the 279 numbers offered from both countries, the median UAE price was typically 8.8 times the median China price. The goods differ: UAE offers are mostly ready stock, often under the vehicle maker's brand, while most China offers are unbranded parts made to order. Where one number had both, the vehicle-maker-branded offers were priced at a median 11.4 times the unbranded ones.

Use a stock wholesaler when a customer is waiting, the quantity is too small for a factory, or the market wants the genuine brand. With branded goods, ask where the stock was bought and check packaging and labels: see Counterfeit Auto Parts: How to Spot Fakes. For other source countries see Auto Parts Sourcing Beyond China.

9. Part-Number Marketplaces: What the Data Looks Like

On a marketplace built around the OEM number you enter the number and get the offers listed for it. On ok.parts the offer page shows price, MOQ, lead time, supplier country and supplier rank; in the October 2026 snapshot the price was visible without login on 81% of offers. For one number a buyer sees:

  • Offers per number: a median of 29; a quarter of the numbers had 54 or more.
  • Price spread: for numbers with at least five priced offers, the offer at the 90th percentile cost a median 2.9 times the one at the 10th percentile. For a quarter of the numbers the gap was 10.5 times or more.
  • Why the gap is wide: the largest gaps come from genuine-brand stock next to unbranded factory parts, and from different items under one number, such as a bushing under the number of the complete arm.

The number makes offers comparable, not identical: a buyer still separates factory from stock, branded from unbranded and assembly from component, as these examples from the snapshot show.

Find suppliers by part number

Where ok.parts fits and where it does not. Buyers search by OEM number, compare the offers of factories and wholesalers and open contacts supplier by supplier; if a number has no offers, a buying request can be posted. Without a part number it is of little use. Price, MOQ and lead time on an offer are what the supplier states, and terms and payment are agreed directly with the supplier. Comparing offers does not replace verification, inspection and a contract - here as in every other channel.

How buyers combine channels

A common sequence: benchmark your main numbers on a part-number marketplace to learn the price range and which suppliers recur; verify the companies behind the best offers; order samples and meet the shortlisted factories at a trade show or in their cluster; then contract, pay, inspect and ship. Urgent and slow-moving numbers are filled from a stock wholesaler. The steps are set out in the step-by-step import guide and the payment guide.

11. Frequently Asked Questions

Is Alibaba or 1688 better for buying auto parts?

They serve different buyers. Alibaba.com is Alibaba Group's international B2B marketplace, with the Trade Assurance program for orders paid through the platform. 1688.com is the group's domestic site, in Chinese and RMB, which buyers abroad commonly use through an agent. Both are searched by keyword, so comparing sellers of one OEM number means collecting quotes yourself.

Can a foreign company buy directly on 1688?

The site is built around trade inside China: it is in Chinese, prices are in RMB and delivery is domestic. Buyers abroad therefore commonly order through an agent who pays, receives, checks and exports the goods.

Is it cheaper to buy auto parts direct from the factory?

Per piece, usually yes: no intermediary margin is added. The price comes with a minimum order quantity and a production lead time - a median of about 38 days in the October 2026 snapshot of ok.parts offers. On small mixed orders the minimums can cancel the saving.

What does a sourcing agent do, and do I need one?

An agent finds suppliers, collects goods from several factories, checks them and ships one consolidated order. It is most useful for a first import, for mixed orders and for purchases on 1688. A buyer with steady volume from a few known factories can work direct and hire only an inspection company.

Why are auto parts from Dubai so much more expensive than from China?

Mostly because they are not the same goods. UAE wholesalers sell ready stock by the piece, often under the vehicle maker's brand; Chinese factory offers are mostly unbranded parts made to order. In the October 2026 snapshot of ok.parts offers the median UAE price for a number was typically 8.8 times the median China price.

Does a marketplace protect my payment to a supplier?

Only if it runs a protection program and you pay through it on that program's terms; Alibaba.com's Trade Assurance is one example. Elsewhere the safeguards are the contract, the payment terms and inspection before the balance is paid. None removes the risk entirely.
